Geoffrey Owen
Dean, Biological Sciences

June 2005

Dear Friends:

I am pleased to announce that ScienceMatters@Berkeley celebrates its one year anniversary this month. Our online research magazine has been connecting alumni and friends of the sciences at Cal through 12 issues, and with great success. Your comments and feedback have proved invaluable and have allowed us to concentrate on your areas of interest. We've expanded our focus to include chemistry as well as the social sciences on occasion. We look forward to broadening our vision of science that matters, according to the feedback we receive from you.

In this issue, you'll read about the research of marine biologist Roy Caldwell, chemist Dean Toste, and mathematician Edward Frenkel. Finally, the life and times of legendary Berkeley statistician Jerzy Neyman are explored. These articles reflect how science has evolved at Berkeley toward an increasingly multi-disciplinary focus.

One of my main priorities as Dean of the Biological Sciences is to learn more about who our alumni are and what they find of interest at Cal. My goal is to reach out to alumni and friends personally, and engage you in campus events and public lectures. Additionally, I would like to bring you news from the College of Letters and Science, and to work with you to determine gratifying ways of encouraging alumni participation and support. In that regard, I invite you to contact me with your questions and concerns. Together, we can shape the future of Berkeley.

I hope that you enjoy this month's issue of ScienceMatters@Berkeley and that it will prompt you to reflect on why science at Berkeley is important to you.

Best regards,

Geoffrey Owen
